11 Reflections on Hajj

Hajj is a symbol of the worshippers devotion to Allah. Every action is a reminder and a lesson of the journey to Allah and the afterlife.

And remember˺ when We assigned to Abraham the site of the House, ˹saying,˺ “Do not associate anything with Me ˹in worship˺ and purify My House for those who circle ˹the Ka’bah˺, stand ˹in prayer˺, and bow and prostrate themselves.

Call ˹all˺ people to the pilgrimage. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel from every distant path [Al-Hajj:26-27]

11 Reflections

#01. PROVISION

The attainment of the provision and wealth to perform hajj, is a reflection to take provision for the afterlife by doing good actions and beware that his actions are not ruined by showing off

#02. DEPARTURE

When he departs from his city leaving his family and friends behind and he begins the difficult journey ahead, it is a reflection on departing this Dunya for the final destination, the day of resurrection and every difficulty that lies in between

#03. IHRAM

When its time for ihram and he removes the clothes of the dunya that he wears with pride and he is naked apart from the 2 white clothes, it is a reflection the kafan, the 2 white burial sheet sheets, and that when he meets his Lord he won’t be wearing the garments of the people fo the Dunya.

#04. TALBIYYAH

When he makes the talbiyyah, is a reflection of his answering the call of Allah

And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage];

#05. AL-HARAM

When he reaches the haram – the ka’bah built for worship, he hopes for acceptance of his journey and is afraid that he didn’t do enough. When he sees the Ka’bah, his heart trembles and he thanks Allah that he made it to the level of those who answered the call and visited His ancient house.

#06. TAWAAF

When he does tawaaf of the house, he reflects over its importance and that it is prayer. Then when he kisses the black stone, he renews his covenant of submission and obedience to Allah and makes the firm resolve to fulfil the covenant.

#07. SAFA & MARWA

When he goes between the two mountains Safa and Marwah, it is a reflection that on judgement day his actions will be weighed between the two the scales of deeds.

#08. ARAFAT

When he is standing on Arafah, and he looks and sees hundreds of thousands of people, their voices raised in Du’a and supplication, in different languages, it is a reflection of yawn al-Qiyaamah, the Day of standing, when every nation that ever existed will be in one place seeking intercession

#09. RAMY JAMARAAT / STONING

When he throws the stones (jimaar) – he is in submission and complete compliance with Allah’s command, and showing complete servitude and worship.

#10. ZIYARATUL-MADINAH / VISITING MADINAH

When he visits Madinah, he reflects that it is the country that Allah chose for his Prophet Muhammad, and made Hijrah there an obligation and decreed it to be the burial place of the Prophet. Then reflects on all the places of the Prophet’s footsteps throughout Madinah, and reflects on the prophets khushoo’ and sakeenah.

#11. SALAAMS ON THE PROPHET (PEACE BE UPON HIM)

If he visits the Prophet’s grave, he reflects on the his lofty status, and he sends salutations on him, in the knowledge that he is aware of the salutations.

ذَٰلِكَ وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ

And whoever honours the symbols of Allah, it is certainly out of the piety of the heart. [Al-Hajj:32]
