How to Do the Funeral Prayer

The document is a guide on how to perform the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) according to the teachings of Sheikh Muhammad bin Saleh bin Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy on him. The procedure and supplications (duas) mentioned are as follows

Intention to pray for the deceased and Takbir

The person leading the prayer (imam) stands in front of the body (near the chest if the deceased is male and near the middle if female) and intends to pray for the deceased. The imam starts the prayer with the first Takbir (saying “Allahu Akbar”).

Al-Fatiha

Al-Fatiha: After the first Takbir, the imam recites Al-Fatiha silently.

Salat al-Ibrahimiyya

After the second Takbir, the imam recites the Salat al-Ibrahimiyya silently, which is:

  • Translation: “O Allah, send your grace, honor, and mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent it upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. In the world, indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.”

Supplication for the Deceased

After the third Takbir, the imam makes a supplication for the deceased. A general dua that can be recited is:

  • Transliteration: Allahumma ighfir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha’ibina, wa sagheerina wa kabeerina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Innaka ta’lamu muqalibana wa mathwana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa’ahyihi ‘alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fatawaffahu ‘ala al-eeman. Wa hadha dua’a ‘amm.”
  • Translation: “O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. You know our turn and abode. O Allah, whoever You keep alive from us, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever You take his soul, take his soul on faith. And this is a general supplication.”

Final Takbir and Salam

After the fourth Takbir, the imam concludes the prayer by turning his head to the right saying, “As-salamu ‘alaykum

wa rahmatullah” (Peace and Mercy of Allah be upon you).

This simplified procedure encapsulates the essence of the Janazah prayer, focusing on the key elements and supplications involved
