In the heart of the Qur’an, revered by over a billion faithful, lies Surah Ar-Ra’d – a chapter that encapsulates the essence of divine wisdom and guidance. This Surah, with its profound messages, offers a vivid journey through the marvels of nature, the certainty of resurrection, and the enduring test of human faith.
1. Marvelling at the Splendour of Creation
Surah Ar-Ra’d opens our eyes to the wonders of creation. It eloquently reminds us in verse 13:2,
It is Allah Who has raised the heavens without pillars—as you can see—then established Himself on the Throne. He has subjected the sun and the moon, each orbiting for an appointed term. He conducts the whole affair. He makes the signs clear so that you may be certain of the meeting with your Lord.
Each sunrise and sunset, every drop of rain, and the roar of thunder are not just natural phenomena but testaments to the Almighty’s grandeur. Verse 13:12-13 beautifully articulates this, illustrating how even thunder is a form of divine glorification.
He is the One Who shows you lightning, inspiring ˹you with˺ hope and fear, and produces heavy clouds. The thunder glorifies His praises, as do the angels in awe of Him. He sends thunderbolts, striking with them whoever He wills. Yet they dispute about Allah. And He is tremendous in might.
Echoing these sentiments, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ underscores the importance of acknowledging and appreciating these signs of God. He says,
“Two types of eyes will be forbidden from the Hellfire; an eye which weeps out of the fear of Allah and an eye that has spent the night in guarding Islam and family from the disbelievers.”
2. The Promise of Resurrection
Surah Ar-Ra’d also draws a compelling parallel between the revival of the earth with rain and the rebirth of souls in the afterlife. This analogy, as mentioned in verse 13:17, serves as a poignant reminder of the cycle of life and the promise of resurrection.
He sends down rain from the sky, causing the valleys to flow, each according to its capacity. The currents then carry along rising foam, similar to the slag produced from metal that people melt in the fire for ornaments or tools. This is how Allah compares truth to falsehood. The ˹worthless˺ scum is then cast away, but what benefits people remains on the earth. This is how Allah sets forth parables.
Complementing this notion is a narration from Sahih Muslim (Book 20, Hadith 4681), where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ speaks of the divine mercy that will deliver souls from Hell. This reinforces the hope and assurance of God’s infinite mercy in the hereafter.
3. Embracing the Divine Truth
The Surah addresses the skepticism often encountered by prophets throughout history. Verse 13:7 reflects on the demands for signs from Allah as a testament to their prophethood. Yet, it also warns of the consequences faced by those who choose denial over faith, as highlighted in verse 13:8.
The disbelievers say, “If only a sign could be sent down to him from his Lord.” You ˹O Prophet˺ are only a warner. And every people had a guide. Allah knows what every female bears and what increases and decreases in the wombs.1 And with Him everything is determined with precision.
The Divine Revelation itself is the miracle of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . This revelation is a guiding light for his followers, surpassing the miracles of previous prophets.
In Conclusion
Surah Ar-Ra’d is a call to introspection and spiritual awakening. It invites us to marvel at the wonders of the universe, to find solace in the promise of resurrection, and to courageously embrace the divine truth. Surah Ar-Ra’d serves as a guide towards a life filled with gratitude, belief, and moral integrity. In its teachings, we find a roadmap for navigating the trials of life with faith and resilience.
