The Significance of Muharram and Ashura

The Month of Muharram

As we approach the sacred month of Muharram, it is important to reflect on its significance and the profound lessons it holds for us. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, holds a special place in our deen. It is one of the four sacred months in which fighting is prohibited, emphasizing the values of peace and contemplation. Allah says in the Quran, in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 36:

‘Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred…'”

The Importance of Ashura

The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is of particular importance.  This is a day of gratitude, for it was on this day that Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and his followers were saved from Pharaoh by Allah’s command to part the Red Sea. In recognition of this divine intervention, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) fasted on this day and encouraged others to do the same.

Fasting and Reflection

Fasting on the day of Ashura is highly recommended. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

“Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope, will expiate for the sins of the previous year” (Reported by Muslim).

This is a beautiful opportunity for us to seek forgiveness and purify our hearts.

A Time for Growth

As we enter this blessed month, let us strive to increase our acts of worship, seek Allah’s forgiveness, and make the most of this time of reflection and growth. May Allah accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and guide us on the straight path.

May peace and blessings be upon you all.
